Hurricanes Shape New Natural Order

Forbes.com has a fascinating article about how the hurricanes change the landscape. Very interesting read.

Shocker!!

The NYT states that Bush lied in a editorial called Spies, Lies and Wiretaps. They go lie-by-lie. It's worth a read.

A "Faith Saver"

SojoNet: Faith, Politics, and Culture has an Op-Ed piece about how:

"Christianity has been hijacked. Christ himself has been hijacked and in the words of theologian Jim Wallis, it is time to take Him back. "
Anthony Wade continues, saying:

"As a born again Christian with a social conscience in latter day America, identity has always been a struggle. The reason for that is if you believe in the heart of Christ's teachings, you often do not have a pulpit in modern Christianity. This is because too often the only Christians willing to step up to the microphone are the fundamentalists on the religious right. Between the calls for war with no end, the advocacy of the assassination of Hugo Chavez and support for a most immoral, and anti-Christian budget in modern history, it is no wonder there are so many Christians on the outside of the debate looking in, wondering where their collective voice can be heard."
This is exactly how I felt for a very long time. Only, I didn't know anyone else felt the same way. Finding sojo.net and Sojourners was a "faith" saver for me. I was beginning to think that I has Jesus pegged all wrong if His followers were so full of hatred, judgment and hypocrisy. Learning that others saw the Jesus of the Bible as I did (and eventually getting hooked up with a church that also saw Jesus this way) was a blessing to me. I hope this article blesses you, too. The Book of Daniel: Axed!

The Book of Daniel is gone as of now. I really liked it, it seems anything remotely smart has no place on network TV!

How low will he go?

Bush is at 36% Approval, the lowest of his Presidency. All I can say is : Where were you people PRIOR to the 2004 election?!?!?!"

What would Buffy say?

As two networks pair up, it's time to get real. The WB and UPN are merging. Most of my favorite shows have been on the WB. Buffy, Dawson's Creek, Felicity. UPN picked up Buffy for the last year and also gives me Veronica Mars, my current "Buffy-like" addiction. I also watch 7th Heaven and have since its beginning. Would these shows have been given a chance in this new network system? We'll see what the "CW" brings.

God isn't Pro-War

Wayward Christian Soldiers - New York Times

I just don't knwo what to say...

AMERICAblog reports of people who call themselves Christians basically doing everything OTHER than what Jesus asks us to do. Apparently a gay couple won a reality TV show and the Christians who, at first, hated them simply because they were gay ended up loving them and the religious right couldn't stand for seeing Christians LOVING gay people. Hilary Swank and Chad Lowe Trying to Save Their Marriage

Hilary Swank and Chad Lowe Trying to Save Their Marriage :: Hollywood.com I commented on the slpit awhile back, so i thought I'd post this. Hope it works out...

Why do so many Christians have to hypocrites?

I know, I know, we're not perfect, just saved. Well, I'm not sure Jesus would agree with that flip response...Here's one example from the "Christian" Right Wing:

Why pay for Radio?

In its story "Satellite cured the radio star," Yahoo! News speaks to the rise of satellite radio in recent years. Why pay for radio? Well, I bet people asked that about TV 20 years ago, too!

We recently got XM. We took the leap because we got the receiver free in a special promotion and thought we'd give it a try. We're hooked! We have it set up so that any radio receiver set to a certain channel will pick up the XM content when the receiver is on. That way we can use the service in both our home and our car. It is so nice to be able to listen to sports and news in the car and have no commercials on music we want to listen to. There are many other neat features, too! The best part might be the ability to see who is singing the song and the name of the song. It's worth a try, if you have any interest at all!

Churches as the new GOP Headquarters?

AMERICAblog comments on a story from the NYT about a couple of churches from Columbus, OH who are in trouble with the IRS for their part in getting Bush Jr elected.
In their complaint, the clergy members contend that the two Columbus-area churches, Fairfield Christian Church and the World Harvest Church, which were widely credited with getting out the Ohio vote for President Bush in 2004, have allowed their facilities to be used by Republican organizations, promoted the candidate, J. Kenneth Blackwell, among their members and otherwise violated prohibitions on political activity by tax-exempt groups. They are asking the I.R.S. to examine whether the churches' tax exemptions should be revoked and are requesting that Mark W. Everson, the federal tax commissioner, seek an injunction to stop what they consider improper activities.Thirty-one clergy members representing a variety of Christian and Jewish denominations signed the complaint, which was shown to the news media on Sunday. Rabbi Harold J. Berman said he had signed because he was concerned that the line between church and state was becoming blurred. "I think government is clearly impaired when churches get too actively involved in government," he said, "and I think religion gets impaired when government acts in religious affairs."

I have an interest in this because not only did I live in Columbus for many years but I also attened World Harvest once with a friend who was a member there. I didn't go back because that kind of Hellfire and Brimstone preaching isn't representative of my God and I didn't like it. I do remember the leader of World Harvest being investigated many times for different things. I'm so glad that these other churches had the guts to call these 2 churches on their indiscretion.

WWJD?

The Los Angeles Times reports that Roman Catholic Bishops Urge U.S. to Transition Out of Iraq. Contrary to media reports, there are many Christians, even evangelicals I know personally, who think the war is immoral and agree with the Bishops that we must leave soon.

Ok, i admit it, I'm addicted to Anderson Cooper

Gawker reports that Anderson Cooper was Live, and with Kelly this morning. I watched and loved every minute of it! While Gawker's readers were less than kind to my, yes "my" Anderson, I was more than happy to learn the little things, like he doesn't like "hot liquids" and is a huge "24" fan.

Another Right-Wing argument bites the dust

The Daily Kos reports:
Former President Clinton said Thursday that he never ordered wiretaps of American citizens without obtaining a court order, as President Bush has acknowledged he has done. Clinton, in an interview broadcast Thursday on the ABC News program ''Nightline,'' said his administration either received court approval before authorizing a wiretap or went to court within three days after to get permission, as required by law. ''We either went there and asked for the approval or, if there was an emergency and we had to do it beforehand, then we filed within three days afterward and gave them a chance to second guess it,'' Clinton told ABC. link

Md. Wal-Mart Told to Boost Health Care

Yahoo! News is reporting on my state's attempt to make Wal-Mart give health insurance to tehir employees. Of course, my esteemed Gov. vetoed the bill, but the Legislature has over ruled him.

I have somewhat mixed feelings on this. I am no fan of Wal-Mart, that's for sure, but I must admit I shop there from time to time because their prices can't be beat. I do hate the reason for this, though, including the issue at hand.

I can see the point that the GOPer's have about not working there if you don't want to, but that doesn't give Wal-Mart a license to take advantage of their employees and give them inadaquete health care coverage.

Crooks and Liars says:

Martha Stewart To Launch New Mag For Thirty-Somethings... I'd give it a try...not too often a mag is aimed at me! That and I like Martha a lot.

Anyone else tired of the Alito hearing?

Or should I say, "The time that Senators can talk about anything, whether it is relevant to the issue at hand or not."

The rest of the country is finally catching up with me!

A recent Poll concludes that:
Americans overwhelmingly lack confidence that Iraq will have a stable government in place within the next year, and more than half say that the war has not been worth its cost
Sadly, I've believed that since the beginning.

Christian?

The Huffungton Post links to an editorial at the Washington Post about Pat Robertson's Disgraceful,Pathetic most recent rant on why Israli's PM suffered a massive stroke. Apparently he brought the whole thing on himself, or rather God did as a punishment. I wonder when the last time was that Pat actually read the Bible he proclaims to hold so dear.

Ministers Anoint Doors And Seats With Oil In Advance Of Alito Hearings...

The Huffington Post reports that ministers have slipped past the guard and "blessed" all the seats for the hearing tomorrow. Wonder if bringing God into the hearing will work for them as they hope. My God is a God of love and not hate, discrimination or fear. I'm not sure those things are in line with what some of the Right has planned for Alito's reign on the Supreme Court.

So much for Bush getting help on Iraq

Media Matters reports that the LA Times and Wash. Post suggested Bush discussed Iraq policy with former officials for one hour; NY Times reported actual discussion lasted "5 to 10 minutes". Appartently that gave each of the participants about 24 seconds to give their opinion, unless, of course, they were interupted by the POTUS, as was Clinton's Sec. of State, Madeline Albright.

Ex-Ohio State star Clarett appears in court on robbery charges

The day after my Ohio State Buckeyes won the Fiesta Bowl again, Maurice Clarett, the star of the National Championship game, appeared in court on robbery charges. He was a high school football star in Warren, OH, who had national acclaim and then was touted as the next Archie Griffin his Freshman year at OSU. It's a real shame because he really could have made a life for himself and his talents are now going to waste. If only he could have stayed on the right track...

Troy takes Tempe

Being an Ohio State grad, I'm always excited to see them in a big Bowl Game. This year was no exception and my Buckeyes went to and won the Fiesta Bowl today! The only thing that hampered my excitement a bit was the fact that my step-dad is a huge Notre Dame fan but luckily, he's a good sport and on't be too upset by the loss (I hope.) Here's an article from SI about the game.
